Here are some close ups and fun facts about Axolotls in general and my little "Axolotl". An axolotl keeps a younger adolescent appearance called Neoteny, with its gills staying outside its body at the back of its head and its tail keeping that tadpole-like fin. It's relative the tiger salamander looks similar to an axolotl when it lives underwater. Unlike the Axolotl, the Tiger Salamander adult sometimes goes and lives on land and sheds those external gills and tail fin. For my "Axolotl" design, it is based off of a leucistic colored Axolotl which is a light pink body, darker red/pink gills, brown/black eyes, and "freckle" like dots on its skin. I have it in a position as if it is swimming down to the ground like a Japanese dragon flying down to the ground to be at eye level with humans. Axolotl's makes me think of Japanese dragons with their long bodies, the outer gills or hairlike structures behind the head, and short arms and legs. I haven't research it but maybe the designs for those dragons were based on a type of salamander? It's thinner fin around the tail has the designs of its food and other creatures it might live with including fish, worms, tadpoles, and crustaceans. It also has Lilly pads, plants, and other items floating at the top of the tail. I imagine this would be an Axolotl's view of the water surface. I tried to find pictures of its naturally habitat which was the lake Xochimilco in Mexico City but that lake was drained due to flooding and is now a part of a canal system. Due to this and other human interventions, the Axolotl is critically endangered. It has found a home in many Axolotl pet lovers homes too. I'm hoping I did this cute little creature justice in my design making. Here are some websites that I found some of my fun facts on. I'm just a doodling artist. My current style started in a lecture class at MCLA where I began doodling in my notebooks. Now I've started a new series focusing on animals. Archives
